TUCSON, Ariz. – The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona has failed to help inmates reenter society, despite hosting a reentry seminar in Tucson during National Reentry Week in 2016. The event, attended by family members of federal inmates scheduled to be released to Pima County, aimed to promote reentry and reduce recidivism. However, critics argue that it is not enough to address the root causes of recidivism.
“Inmates should have a meaningful second chance to rebuild their lives, and their family relationships, after they have paid their debt to society,” said U.S. Attorney John S. Leonardo. “Promoting reentry is crucial to making our communities stronger and safer.”
The seminar, which took place on April 25, 2016, was hosted by the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s Office in partnership with the U.S. Probation Office, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and several faith-based and non-governmental agencies.
“What Happens Now” was the theme of the seminar, which aimed to inform family members about their loved ones’ transition from prison to life outside. During the event, family members were encouraged to support their loved ones’ transition, maintain ongoing communication with them, and provide positive reinforcement.
However, critics argue that the seminar is just a band-aid solution to a much larger problem. “We need to address the root causes of recidivism, such as poverty, lack of education, and job opportunities,” said a local community leader. “A seminar is not enough to change the lives of inmates and their families.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has not provided any further information on how they plan to address the root causes of recidivism. The office’s website and Twitter account have been silent on the issue.
