BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Ignacio Miguel Tirado-Castillo is facing life in prison for what officials are calling a brazen move to traffic carfentanil into the heart of Alabama.
The 19-year-old Arizona man was arrested on August 11, 2025, following an investigation that led to his unsealing indictment. According to U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona, Tirado-Castillo is accused of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a fentanyl analogue and attempt to distribute the same in December 2024.
Details of the case show that Tirado-Castillo is alleged to have mailed approximately 25 pounds of the deadly substance to Alabama. The drug’s lethal dosage is so high that it can kill hundreds of people.
The maximum penalty for these charges is a life sentence, underscoring the severity of the crime. Assistant U.S. Attorney Allison J. Garnett is now prosecuting the case.
This investigation and prosecution are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide federal initiative aimed at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations while protecting American communities. Led by the Alabama Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF), which operates under Executive Order 14159, this operation has been pivotal in the fight against illegal drug trafficking.
The U.S. Postal Service, Birmingham Police Department, and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were instrumental in investigating and bringing this case to trial. As the court proceedings unfold, Tirado-Castillo is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
