Jeffery Thompson, a 39-year-old native of Osceola, Arkansas, and resident of Sioux City, Iowa, has been found guilty by a federal jury for conspiring to distribute crack cocaine. The conviction followed a three-day trial in federal court in Sioux City, where Thompson was also charged with distributing the substance.
Evidence presented at the trial revealed that Thompson was part of a conspiracy that spanned from 2008 to 2011 and involved the distribution of over 280 grams of crack cocaine. On June 18, 2010, Thompson was caught in Sioux City distributing crack cocaine to an individual who was working with law enforcement.
Thompson’s conviction is not his first brush with the law; he has been previously convicted of four felony drug offenses between 2001 and 2013. Sentencing before United States District Court Judge Mark W. Bennett will be scheduled after a presentence report is completed, keeping Thompson in federal custody until then.
The potential sentence for Thompson’s conspiracy conviction is life imprisonment, with a maximum fine of $20,000,000. The distribution charge carries up to 30 years’ imprisonment without parole, a fine of up to $2,000,000, and a mandatory special assessment of $100, along with supervised release terms ranging from six years to life.
Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde is handling the prosecution of Thompson’s case, which was investigated by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, a joint effort involving numerous local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
