Ashraf Hassan-Gouda, Tax Fraud, New Jersey 2007

Ashraf Hassan-Gouda, a former resident of Mays Landing, N.J., has been sentenced to 541 days in prison for his role in tax fraud, according to a statement from the Justice System and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Hassan-Gouda’s sentence, which is approximately 18 months, is for time served. The tax preparer had previously pleaded guilty to willfully assisting in the preparation of a false federal individual income tax return for a client.

The crime occurred in 2003, when Hassan-Gouda owned Tax World, a tax preparation business located in Atlantic City, N.J. It was at this business that the false tax return was prepared for the client.

Hassan-Gouda was indicted in 2007 and fled to Egypt. However, he was eventually extradited to the United States from Germany in 2012.

The case was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation, and prosecuted by Tax Division Trial Attorneys Yael Epstein, Thomas Voracek and Shawn Noud.
