A Pittsburgh woman has admitted to violating federal firearm laws by purchasing a gun for a convicted felon, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Asia M. Harris, 34, pleaded guilty to one count of violating federal firearm laws in federal court on September 9, 2014.
According to the plea agreement, Harris purchased a Springfield XDM-40 .40 caliber pistol from a Pittsburgh-area sporting goods store on August 16, 2011. The gun was later found on the bed in the master bedroom shared by Harris and Mark A. Brazil, a convicted felon.
Harris admitted to purchasing the gun for Brazil, who was not allowed to possess a firearm due to his criminal record. Harris stated that Brazil gave her $800 to buy the gun and told her which gun to buy. She also admitted that she considered the firearm to be Brazil’s property and knew that her actions were wrong.
Harris faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Sentencing is scheduled for October 11, 2014 at 11 a.m.
Harris was released on bond pending sentencing. The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Allegheny County Police, with the assistance of the Pittsburgh Police.
Assistant United States Attorney Margaret E. Picking is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
