New York – A grim chapter in the case of Bruce Boyd’s death has closed as the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under New York Attorney General Letitia James issued a Notification of Investigative Findings. The OSI determined that there was insufficient evidence to disprove beyond a reasonable doubt that deadly force used by Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) officers on April 4, 2025, in Brentwood, was justified.
The incident began with SCPD responding to a wellness check. Unbeknownst to them, the situation escalated as Boyd emerged from his home wielding knives. After repeated calls for him to drop the weapons, officers discharged their firearms, resulting in his death.
Incident video captures the tense moments leading up to the shooting, depicting body-worn cameras capturing the incident’s unfolding events. The scene concluded with two knives recovered at the crime scene.
The OSI’s assessment and investigation are conducted under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which mandates thorough reviews of any incident where police or peace officers may have caused a death.
In cases like this, where evidence is clear, OSI issues a Notification of Investigative Findings to announce the completion of its investigation. A final Investigation Report will be released at a later date in compliance with legal requirements.
