ERIE, Pa. – Ancelmo Ayala, 42, formerly of Elkhart, Indiana, officially entered a guilty plea in federal court today, admitting his role in a multi-state cocaine trafficking operation. The confession brings a significant development in a case that Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song’s office has been building for years.
Ayala pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge David S. Cercone. Court records reveal a conspiracy stretching from June 2013 to February 2015, involving a network of eighteen co-defendants dedicated to the distribution and possession of cocaine. The operation funneled narcotics from Texas, targeting distribution points in both Erie, Pennsylvania and across state lines in Ohio.
Federal prosecutors detailed Ayala’s specific function within the organization: he was a key transporter. According to information presented to the court, Ayala utilized a vehicle rigged with hidden compartments to smuggle the cocaine shipments into Erie. This wasn’t a one-off delivery; Ayala repeatedly moved the drugs as part of the larger, coordinated criminal enterprise.
The scale of the operation is substantial. The potential penalty for Ayala’s crimes is severe, with a maximum sentence of 40 years imprisonment, a hefty $5,000,000 fine, or a combination of both. However, Judge Cercone will ultimately determine the sentence based on the specifics of the offense and Ayala’s criminal history, if any, adhering to Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
The investigation, a collaborative effort by a multitude of federal and state agencies, included Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Pennsylvania State Police, U.S. Border Patrol, the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General Organized Crime Section, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, and the Arkansas State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Marshall J. Piccinini is leading the prosecution.
Ayala’s sentencing is currently scheduled for August 14, 2017, at 12:45 p.m. This case underscores the continued flow of narcotics across state lines and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to dismantle these criminal networks. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the sentencing as it develops.
