Bakersfield Man Charged with Receiving Child Pornography

Federal authorities yesterday handed down a four-count indictment against Roman Rodriguez, 26, of Bakersfield, for his alleged involvement in receiving and distributing child pornography.

According to court documents, Rodriguez is accused of using his iPhone to receive and distribute at least one visual depiction of a child engaged in sexually explicit conduct between February 18th and 22nd, 2024. The defendant also allegedly used other devices to receive visual depictions of a child engaged in sexually explicit conduct during multiple other timeframes that began as early as October 2022.

The indictment, which was handed down by a federal grand jury in Fresno, California, charges Rodriguez with receipt and distribution of child pornography. If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum statutory penalty of up to 20 years in prison, with a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, and a fine of up to $250,000.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brittany M. Gunter is prosecuting the case, which is the result of an investigation by the Homeland Security Investigations and the Bakersfield Police Department. This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Rodriguez is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The full weight of the law will be brought to bear in this case, and justice will be served if the defendant is found guilty. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.

Project Safe Childhood is a critical initiative that brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute those who exploit children via the internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
