Ballot Fraud Unit Set Up in Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS – In a shocking move, U.S. Attorney Patrick Miles has designated a federal prosecutor to protect the right to vote and prosecute ballot fraud in Michigan. Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Daniels, with over 30 years of experience, has been tasked with handling claims of voter discrimination, intimidation, and fraud on November 8, 2016.

Residents of Michigan can reach Mr. Daniels until the polls close on election day at (616) 808-2014.

“My office and the U.S. Attorney’s office will ensure that all qualified voters have the opportunity to cast their ballots and have their votes counted free of discrimination, intimidation or fraud in the election process,” U.S. Attorney Miles said.

U.S. Attorney Miles noted that his office and local FBI agents can receive, investigate and pursue complaints of voter discrimination, intimidation, and fraud. His office coordinates and works with the Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section to enforce the civil provisions of a wide range of federal statutes that protect the right to vote.

The U.S. Attorney’s office also works in conjunction with the Civil Rights Division’s Criminal Section to enforce federal criminal statutes that prohibit voter intimidation and voter suppression based on race, color, national origin or religion.

The Civil Rights Division will implement a comprehensive program to help protect the right to vote, including monitoring in the field at polling places around the country and receiving election-related complaints of potential violations relating to any of the statutes the Civil Rights Division enforces.

Individuals can report complaints related to voting rights by calling 1-800-253-3931 toll free, 202-307-2767, or by TTY at 202-305-0082. Complaints can also be submitted by fax at 202-307-3961, by mail to voting.section@usdoj.gov, or through a link on the U.S. Attorney’s website.

Complaints related to violence, threats of violence or intimidation at a polling place should always be reported immediately to local authorities and U.S. Attorney Miles’ office.
