Montgomery, Alabama – In a ruthless display of justice, Benjamin Michael Smith, the Coffee County bank bandit, has been sentenced to forty months in federal prison for his brazen attempts to rob two banks in the area.
The United States Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., announced today that Smith, a resident of Coffee County, Alabama, was handed down this severe sentence for his federal felony charges of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery.
This grim saga began on February 16, 2010, when Smith tried to rob Citizen’s Bank in Coffee County. He failed but did not back down. On December 5, 2011, he struck again, this time successfully robbing CB&T Bank in the same county.
United States District Judge Mark E. Fuller imposed a total sentence of forty months behind bars and three years of supervised release upon Smith’s release from prison. The defendant remains in the custody of the United States Marshals Service until the Bureau of Prisons arranges his placement.
The investigation into Smith’s criminal activities was spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with valuable assistance from the Enterprise Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jerusha T. Adams led the prosecution of this case.
