Bank Robber Sentenced to 7 Years
Baltimore, Maryland – A Detroit man has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for his role in three bank robberies in western Maryland and West Virginia.
Dwayne Smiley, Sr., 49, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake on charges of bank robbery. Smiley’s sentencing was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Stephen E. Vogt of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and Washington County Sheriff Douglas W. Mullendore.
According to Smiley’s plea agreement, he and his accomplice, Donald Hays, robbed the BB&T bank in Martinsburg, West Virginia, on December 30, 2010. The pair stole $1,070 and later divided the money.
On January 6, 2011, Smiley and Hays robbed the M&T Bank in Clear Spring, Maryland, stealing $3,186. The next day, they robbed the M&T Bank in Hagerstown, Maryland, stealing $2,726.
Smiley’s role in the robberies was to drive Hays to and from the banks. The pair later divided the stolen money.
Donald Hays, 61, had previously pleaded guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced on November 12, 2013.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the FBI and Washington County Sheriff’s Office for their work in the investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Mark W. Crooks and P. Michael Cunningham prosecuted the case.
