Washington D.C. was abuzz in July 1895 as General Master Workman Sovereign, a leading figure in the labor movement, prepared to unleash a scathing manifesto against the nation’s banks. The Knights of Labor, a union dedicated to fighting for workers’ rights, had had enough of the financial elite’s stranglehold on the economy. Sovereign’s manifesto, set to take effect on September 1, 1895, called for a boycott of all national banks, targeting their role in perpetuating debt and suffering among the working class.
