Two Local Residents Convicted of Heroin Trafficking in Grant County.
ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – In a shocking turn of events, John Daniel Barnett, 39, and Kaylei Oressa Wilson, 26, both of Petersburg, West Virginia, have been convicted of heroin trafficking. United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II, announced the conviction today.
The defendants, along with other individuals, conspired to possess and sell heroin in Grant County, West Virginia throughout 2014 and 2015. This egregious crime demonstrates the severity of the opioid epidemic plaguing our nation.
According to court documents, Barnett and Wilson each pled guilty today to one count of “Distribution of Heroin.” This charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendants.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Stein prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The West Virginia State Police and the Potomac Highlands Drug and Violent Crime Task Force investigated the case.
U.S. Magistrate Judge John S. Kaull presided over the case. Barnett and Wilson each face up to 20 years in prison, a harsh reminder of the consequences of heroin trafficking.
