Geta Barr, Tax Fraud, Alabama 2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Geta Barr, a Birmingham tax preparer, is trading tax forms for prison stripes after being sentenced to 18 months behind bars for a calculated scheme to defraud the U.S. government. U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Blackburn handed down the sentence today, bringing a close – but not a full reckoning – to Barr’s years of criminal activity.

Barr, the owner of Maxi Tax Resource, LLC, didn’t just make honest mistakes; the evidence shows a systematic effort to inflate refunds for clients and line her own pockets. According to court documents, Barr pleaded guilty in February 2025 to one count of aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of a false and fraudulent tax return – a charge that barely scratches the surface of the damage she inflicted.

The scope of the fraud is staggering. Between tax years 2016 and 2020, Barr prepared approximately 900 tax returns. A whopping 96% of them claimed refunds, a red flag that should have triggered immediate scrutiny. But Barr didn’t stop at simply claiming refunds. She fabricated businesses, conjured losses on Schedule Cs, and invented itemized deductions to maximize the payouts for at least 14 clients.

The scheme wasn’t about helping people; it was about greed. Barr’s fraudulent filings resulted in a total tax loss to the IRS exceeding $300,000. That’s $300,000 stolen from American taxpayers, money that could have funded vital programs and services. This wasn’t a victimless crime; it impacts everyone.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) led the investigation, meticulously untangling Barr’s web of lies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan S. Rummage prosecuted the case, building a solid case that left Barr with no viable options but to admit guilt. While 18 months is a start, many will question whether the sentence adequately reflects the scale and brazenness of the fraud.

Barr’s case serves as a stark warning to other tax preparers: dishonesty will be exposed, and the consequences will be severe. The Grimy Times will continue to track this case and report on any further developments. The public deserves to know who is stealing from them, and we intend to deliver that information, no matter how unpleasant.
