ROME, Ga. – A Bartow County felon named Shane Jacquces Barfield has been locked away for a decade in federal prison after attempting to take out local law enforcement with a stolen firearm.
“Barfield’s actions were nothing short of reckless,” U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg stated. “He thought he had the right to bear arms, but he failed to recognize the gravity of his crime. His sentence is a testament to the severity of the charges and the danger he posed.”
According to court documents, on September 17, 2023, Barfield was driving through Cartersville with methamphetamine and a stolen gun when he lost control of his vehicle, crashing into the side of the road. With the gun in hand, he fled the scene only to return moments later. Ignoring police orders to surrender, he aimed and fired at an officer before being taken down by multiple shots.
“His actions put innocent lives at risk,” FBI Atlanta Special Agent in Charge Paul Brown added. “But thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of our officers, no one was hurt.”
Cartersville Police Chief Frank McCann echoed these sentiments: “Barfield is a dangerous criminal who should never have had access to a gun. His sentence serves as a warning to others that we will not tolerate such threats against law enforcement or the public.”
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI and the Cartersville Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Katie Terry leading the prosecution. Barfield, 39, of Cartersville, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge William M. Ray, II to ten years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
