Beaumont ISD Employees Hit With Fraud Charges

BEAUMONT, Texas — A shocking revelation has emerged from the Eastern District of Texas as three former Beaumont Independent School District (ISD) employees have been indicted for a staggering fraud scheme that drained public funds.

Daryl Glenn Johnson, 44, Erin Gipson Johnson, 38, and Kailyn DeShondra Pete, 25, all residents of Beaumont, stand accused by a federal grand jury of conspiracy and fraud upon programs receiving federal funds. The trio allegedly colluded to embezzle money from the school district.

According to court documents, Daryl Johnson, who served as warehouse supervisor, is accused of adding his wife, Erin Johnson, and a friend, Kailyn Pete, to the payroll under false pretenses. Both individuals were never employed by BISD yet received substantial paychecks over several years. Erin Johnson was paid $193,998.37 from July 2009 through May 2011, while Kailyn Pete collected $90,041.05 between June 2010 and May 2012.

The indicted employees are facing the possibility of up to ten years in federal prison if convicted of their charges. This investigation is a joint effort by the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, the Beaumont Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joe Batte and Christopher T. Tortorice leading the prosecution.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in public institutions. It underscores the importance of thorough audits and oversight to prevent such financial misdeeds from occurring.

It is important to note that an indictment should not be considered evidence of guilt, and all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
