Newark’s Jonathan Garcia, alias ‘Bebo,’ was today sentenced to 98 months in federal prison for his involvement in a conspiracy to traffic crack cocaine with the notorious ‘Famous Boyz’ street gang. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito following Garcia’s guilty plea and conviction.
Garcia, aged 36, had previously pleaded guilty via videoconference before Judge Madeline Cox Arleo. He faced charges for conspiring to distribute 28 grams or more of crack cocaine, as well as distributing and possessing with intent to distribute both cocaine and crack cocaine.
His sentencing comes after a series of convictions within the gang. Saeed Dawes, alias ‘Nasty,’ was sentenced to 57 months in August 2020 for conspiring to distribute crack cocaine and heroin. Jonathan Hernandez, aged 25, pleaded guilty on Aug. 26, 2020, to conspiring to distribute crack cocaine and possessing with intent to distribute the drug.
The trio were among a group of 15 charged by criminal complaint in October 2018 following a wiretap investigation into drug trafficking activities in Newark. To date, 14 defendants have pleaded guilty, with seven awaiting sentencing.
Patricio Hernandez, Jonathan Hernandez, and Garcia were initially charged with conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine for supplying the ‘Famous Boyz’ gang. The charges against John Mosley, alias ‘Breezy’, remained pending as he was a primary source of narcotics for the gang, often directing operations and sharing drugs, customers, and firearms among gang members.
According to court documents, the gang used social media to promote their activities, including advertising drug trafficking proceeds and threatening rival gang members. The ‘Famous Boyz’ also committed robberies to enrich themselves, with heroin sales containing a dangerous fentanyl analogue.
