JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Stephen Edward Weaver, 55, of Schellsburg, Pennsylvania, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted by a grand jury in Pittsburgh on a count of possession of an unregistered destructive device. The case, announced today by U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton, centers around two pipe bombs allegedly found in Weaver’s possession.
The indictment details that on June 5, 2011, Weaver was found to be in possession of the unregistered destructive devices. While details surrounding the discovery remain scarce, the charge itself carries a hefty penalty. If convicted, Weaver could face a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, alongside a fine of $250,000, or a combination of both.
Federal Sentencing Guidelines will ultimately dictate the final sentence, taking into account the severity of the offense and any prior criminal history Weaver may have. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is leading the prosecution, determined to see justice served in this case. The government maintains a firm stance against illegal weapons and those who possess them.
The investigation that led to this indictment was a joint effort between the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop G Barracks, Bedford Barracks, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). These agencies worked in concert to gather evidence and build a case against Weaver, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation in tackling serious crime.
Hickton emphasized that Weaver is being prosecuted under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative aimed at preventing, deterring, and prosecuting gun crime. The project brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement, prosecutors, and community members to address the issue of violence and illegal firearms.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation, and Weaver is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He is entitled to a full and fair trial, where the prosecution must demonstrate his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as they become available.
