Bell Sentenced to 24 Years for Brutal Shooting Spree

A man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for a senseless and brutal shooting that left one man dead and another critically injured.

DeJuan Bell, 47, of Washington, D.C., was handed down the sentence by Superior Court Judge Marisa J. Demeo on May 17, 2024, for the December 2021 murder of Davon Childs and the shooting of another individual.

Bell pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed and aggravated assault while armed on March 1, 2024. He will serve five years of supervised release for both charges concurrently with his prison sentence.

According to the government’s evidence, Bell intentionally fired a 9mm semi-automatic handgun at least seven times in the direction of two unarmed people on the evening of December 10, 2021, in the second-floor hallway of an apartment building in the 2300 block of 4th Street NE.

The shooting resulted in the death of one of the victims and left the other severely wounded. Bell’s actions were described as ‘senseless and brutal’ by authorities.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith commended the work of those investigating the case from the Metropolitan Police Department. They also acknowledged the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Erin DeRiso and Sarah Santiago, who investigated and prosecuted the case.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Metropolitan Police Department. The team involved in the case included Paralegal Lauren Douglas and former Paralegal Debra Forte. Their dedication and hard work led to the successful prosecution of Bell.

The community is breathing a sigh of relief now that justice has been served. The victims’ families are finally able to begin the healing process, knowing that the perpetrator of this heinous crime is behind bars. The sentence serves as a reminder that violence will not be tolerated in our city.

Bell’s sentence sends a strong message that those who engage in senseless violence will face the full force of the law. The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Metropolitan Police Department will continue to work tirelessly to keep our community safe and bring justice to those who have been victimized.
