Benedict Iron Thunder Jr., a 36-year-old man from McLaughlin, South Dakota, has been found guilty of a heinous crime. On June 18, 2010, Iron Thunder brutally assaulted a female victim, leaving her with severe injuries, including a large lump on the top of her head, a swollen and bloody nose, multiple injuries to the mouth, and various bruises on her body.
The victim, who cannot be named for her protection, reported that she was struck numerous times in the head and kicked repeatedly in the back. The police investigation, led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, revealed that the victim’s attacker had left bloody footprints on her back.
This is not the first time Iron Thunder has committed such a crime. He has been found guilty of assaulting the same victim on two or more separate prior occasions, with both incidents involving assault against a spouse and intimate partner.
Iron Thunder was indicted by a federal grand jury in January of 2013 and pled guilty on March 15, 2013. He was sentenced on June 24, 2013, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange to 38 months imprisonment, 2 years of supervised release, and a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Morley, who stated, ‘This sentence is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in ensuring that those who commit such heinous crimes are held accountable.’
Iron Thunder was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service to begin serving his sentence. The Grimy Times condemns such acts of violence and applauds the efforts of law enforcement agencies in bringing such perpetrators to justice.
