A devastating case of disregard for the law has come to light in Madison Heights, Virginia. Bernadino Rodriguez, 26, has been sentenced to additional prison time for failing to report to federal prison, as ordered following a drug conviction in 2015.
Rodriguez, a Madison Heights resident, had previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine in April 2015. This led to a 72-month federal prison sentence, which he was ordered to serve at FCI Butner.
However, Rodriguez failed to report to FCI Butner, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant. He was subsequently arrested on April 26, 2016. Today, he pleaded guilty to a new charge of failure to surrender for service of sentence.
U.S. Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. emphasized the importance of adhering to the rule of law, stating, ‘Individuals who are convicted and sentenced must surrender for service.’ He added, ‘Those defendants who are able to self-report must not take advantage of the system, but when they do, they will be punished.’
Rodriguez was sentenced to an additional 21 months of incarceration on the failure to surrender for service charge. This brings the total prison time to 93 months, with the defendant set to begin serving his sentence immediately.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Bassford prosecuted the case for the United States.
The case serves as a reminder of the consequences of failing to adhere to the law and the importance of respecting the judicial process.
