Berry Gets 30 Years for Exploiting 3-Year-Old

SYRACUSE, NY – Lawrence Berry, 28, of Marathon, New York, will spend the next three decades behind bars after being sentenced today for the horrific sexual exploitation of a 3-year-old child. United States District Court Judge David N. Hurd delivered the sentence, a grim reckoning for a calculated and depraved crime.

According to court documents, Berry conspired with Brittany Berry, who has already admitted her involvement and faces sentencing in December 2021, to systematically abuse a vulnerable child between August and September of 2018. The pair didn’t act on impulse; Berry directed Brittany Berry to commit the abuse on five separate occasions, specifically to capture images and videos of the acts. These images and videos were then sent to Lawrence Berry over the internet, fueling his monstrous obsession.

The case, spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albany Field Office and the City of Cortland Police Department, peeled back layers of calculated cruelty. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael D. Gadarian and Adrian LaRochelle presented a damning case that left no room for leniency. Berry’s guilty plea offered a glimpse into the depravity, but did little to lessen the severity of his actions. Judge Hurd clearly agreed, imposing the maximum sentence allowed.

But the prison term isn’t the end of the legal ramifications for Berry. Upon his release – after serving the full 30 years – he will face 25 years of supervised release. And even then, he won’t be free. Berry will be required to register as a sex offender in any state he resides, works, or studies in, a permanent marker of his heinous crime.

This case was brought under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006. The project, a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement, aims to aggressively target and prosecute individuals involved in the online sexual exploitation of children. It’s a necessary, if grim, reminder that predators are lurking in the digital shadows, and law enforcement is actively working to bring them to justice. More information on Project Safe Childhood can be found at https://www.justice.gov/psc.

The sentencing of Lawrence Berry serves as a stark warning: exploiting a child is not just a crime, it’s a betrayal of innocence that carries severe and lasting consequences. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case, including the sentencing of Brittany Berry, and report on the ongoing fight against child exploitation.
