A shocking crime has shaken the community of Pinedale, New Mexico, as Betrina Harry Grey, a 32-year-old woman and enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has been charged with escaping from custody.
According to the indictment, Grey knowingly escaped from the Diersen Charities Residential Re-entry Center, an institutional facility in which she was lawfully confined following her conviction for involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury on November 11, 2022.
The U.S. Marshals Service investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Marshall is prosecuting the case.
Grey will remain in temporary custody pending a detention hearing, which is scheduled for January 12, 2024. If convicted of the most serious allegation, Grey faces five years in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
An indictment is only an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The U.S. government is taking this case very seriously, and it’s clear that Grey’s actions have consequences.
As the case moves forward, the community will be closely watching to see how it unfolds.
