A federal inmate has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his cellmate. David Lee Bishop, 50, of Ocala, pleaded guilty to second degree murder on April 5, 2024, just days before his federal jury trial was set to begin.
According to court documents, Bishop strangled his cellmate to death on February 3, 2019, at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex using a torn bedsheet. The gruesome crime was committed while Bishop was already serving a life sentence.
In a chilling phone call to his mother shortly after the murder, Bishop admitted to the crime, stating he had “messed up” and that it was “totally and utterly on purpose”. When his mother asked if there had been an accident, Bishop responded that he was “just waiting on them to find ‘it.’”
When prison guards discovered the lifeless body of his cellmate, Bishop immediately admitted to the murder. The investigation into the crime was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Belkis H. Crockett, Tyrie K. Boyer, Robert E. Bodnar, Jr., and Michael P. Felicetta. Senior United States District Judge John Antoon II handed down the life sentence to Bishop, ensuring that he will spend the rest of his days behind bars.
The sentence serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities of life within the federal prison system. The fact that Bishop was already serving a life sentence at the time of the murder raises questions about the effectiveness of the system in rehabilitating inmates and preventing further violence.
The incident also highlights the need for increased scrutiny of the conditions within federal prisons and the measures in place to prevent such heinous crimes from occurring. As the case of David Lee Bishop comes to a close, it serves as a sobering reminder of the darker aspects of the federal prison system and the need for continued vigilance in ensuring the safety of both inmates and prison staff.
