Black Hawk Man Gets 11 Years for Meth Ring Role

RAPID CITY, SD – Jackie Corean, 63, of Black Hawk, South Dakota, will spend over a decade in federal prison for his central role in a large-scale methamphetamine distribution network that flooded the Rapid City area and the Pine Ridge Reservation. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the 11-year, three-month sentence on September 2, 2025, following Corean’s guilty plea earlier this year.

The sentence comes after a federal grand jury indicted Corean in February 2024 on charges of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. The investigation revealed a sophisticated operation stretching from Denver, Colorado, into the heart of South Dakota. Between January 2022 and February 2024, Corean and his associates were actively transporting significant quantities of methamphetamine northward, establishing a steady supply for street-level dealers.

Corean wasn’t just a transporter; authorities say his Black Hawk residence served as a key distribution hub. The indictment detailed how he facilitated the flow of drugs, allowing his property to be used for packaging and sales. More disturbingly, investigators uncovered conversations where Corean discussed arming himself and others, planning to trade firearms for more methamphetamine in Denver. This potential escalation to armed trafficking only deepened the severity of the charges.

Before Corean could carry out the firearms exchange, law enforcement intervened, executing a search warrant at his home. The raid yielded six firearms and a mountain of drug paraphernalia – scales, packaging materials, and other tools of the trade – solidifying the case against him. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, a paltry sum considering the damage inflicted by his operation.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, drawing resources from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the Rapid City Police Department, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the Wyoming State Highway Patrol, and the North Metro Denver Drug Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Patterson led the prosecution, successfully securing the conviction and lengthy sentence.

Following the sentencing, Corean was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service. The bust underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in South Dakota and the continued flow of narcotics from major hubs like Denver. While Corean is behind bars, authorities are likely investigating remaining members of the conspiracy, hoping to dismantle the entire network and stem the tide of methamphetamine poisoning communities across the state.
