In a brazen attack, thousands of Filipino rebels descended upon General MacArthur’s lines in San Fernando, Manila, on June 17, 1899. The rebels, estimated to be around 5,000 strong, had been planning their assault for some time, cutting the railroad and telegraph lines at Apalit, seven miles south of the city, to sever communication.
