Body Cam Footage Unveiled in Hugh Davis’ Death Investigation

New York Attorney General Letitia James has released body-worn camera footage from the investigation into the tragic death of Hugh Davis, who died on August 13, 2025, following a confrontation with Cheektowaga Police Department (CPD) officers in Buffalo.

At approximately 12:45 p.m. on the day of the incident, CPD officers were attempting to arrest Mr. Davis for an alleged previous assault when the encounter turned fatal. According to reports, an officer knocked on the door of Mr. Davis’ apartment and the door panel fell inward as Mr. Davis emerged holding a knife, nearly striking an officer. In response, one of the officers discharged his service weapon, resulting in Mr. Davis’ death at the scene. A large kitchen-type knife was recovered from the scene.

The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) within the Attorney General’s Office is responsible for reviewing all incidents where a police or peace officer may have caused the death of an individual by act or omission, regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty, and irrespective of whether the decedent was armed or unarmed, or in custody. Following this review, OSI conducted a thorough investigation into the incident involving Mr. Davis.

Attorney General James has directed that camera footage obtained by her office during OSI investigations be released to the public to enhance transparency and bolster public trust. The release of this footage does not indicate any opinion on the guilt or innocence of any party in a criminal matter, nor does it express any view on whether charges will be filed.
