‘Body’ Coffin Gets 10+ Years for Gun & Drugs

ALBANY, NY – John Coffin, 47, known on the streets as “Body,” is headed for over a decade in federal prison. Coffin was sentenced today to 125 months – just over ten and a half years – followed by five years of supervised release, for illegally possessing a firearm while connected to his drug dealing operation. The sentence sends a clear message: guns and drugs don’t mix, and those who peddle both will face serious consequences.

The case, spearheaded by the FBI’s Albany Division and the New York State Police, revealed a grim picture of Coffin’s operation out of Schenectady. According to court documents, Coffin wasn’t just holding the loaded 9 millimeter rifle for protection – he was using it to safeguard the proceeds from his drug sales. Cash and narcotics were stashed at his home, guarded by the weapon, painting a picture of a man deeply entrenched in criminal activity.

U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and FBI Special Agent in Charge Andrew W. Vale announced the sentencing, highlighting the collaborative effort that brought Coffin to justice. The investigation, which also included the Schenectady Police Department, demonstrates the commitment of federal and local law enforcement to dismantling drug networks and removing dangerous individuals from the streets.

During sentencing, Senior United States District Judge Gary L. Sharpe didn’t mince words. He described Coffin’s criminal history as “absolutely abysmal,” a damning assessment of a life repeatedly marked by lawbreaking. The Judge specifically noted Coffin’s “absolute penchant for drugs and guns,” underscoring the dangerous combination that led to his conviction.

Coffin pleaded guilty on August 4th, admitting to possessing the firearm and acknowledging its connection to his drug trafficking activities. The plea allowed him to avoid a potentially longer sentence following a trial, but it didn’t save him from a substantial prison term. The 125-month sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and the Judge’s concern about Coffin’s repeated disregard for the law.

Assistant United States Attorney Wayne A. Myers prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that secured Coffin’s conviction. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and gun violence in the region. This sentencing serves as a stark reminder that those who choose a life of crime will ultimately pay the price.
