United States Attorney Josh Minkler announced that 43-year-old Julie Ann Ashman of Fairland, Indiana, has been charged federally for a massive embezzlement scheme. According to court documents, Ashman served as the bookkeeper for an Indiana small business specializing in X-ray equipment repair and refurbishment.
Ashman is accused of siphoning over $1.8 million from the company by cutting checks to herself, understating revenue on ledgers, and falsifying check memo lines. She also failed to report or pay taxes on the stolen funds, evading nearly half a million dollars in taxes.
Minkler emphasized the trust betrayed, stating, ‘Those who choose to commit fraud will be caught, prosecuted, and held accountable.’
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service. Assistant United States Attorney Nick Linder noted that Ashman has agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud and tax evasion charges, facing up to 20 years for fraud and five years for tax evasion.
Charges are not evidence of guilt, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise in federal court.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact white-collar crime can have on small businesses and communities.
