BOSTON – Carmen J. Polito, 35, of Boston, is facing federal charges after allegedly unleashing a barrage of threats against a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Task Force Officer stationed in Miami, Florida. Polito was arrested today and charged in federal court, bringing a chilling case of targeted intimidation into the spotlight.
According to court documents, the threats began on May 3, 2017, with Polito, already known to the FBI Miami Division, leaving menacing voice mails and sending disturbing text messages to the officer. The content wasn’t veiled – Polito explicitly threatened to stab the officer, and ominously stated, “an officer is going to die.” The feds didn’t take long to act.
The threats didn’t stop at words. Polito reportedly accompanied his texts with photographs showcasing various weapons, images of Boston City Hall, and even police vehicles – a clear attempt to amplify the fear and demonstrate a perceived reach. Federal agents quickly traced the communications back to a cell phone, pinpointing Polito’s location in Brookline, Massachusetts, where he was promptly arrested.
During his initial appearance before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge M. Page Kelley, concerns were raised regarding Polito’s mental competency, leading to an order for a full evaluation. This adds another layer of complexity to a case already steeped in disturbing allegations.
If convicted, Polito faces a potential prison sentence of no more than five years, followed by three years of supervised release, and a hefty fine of $250,000. However, it’s important to note that actual sentences in federal cases often fall below the maximum penalties, determined by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors.
The announcement of these charges was made jointly by Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb, Harold H. Shaw, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Field Division, and Brookline Police Chief Daniel C. O’Leary. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Weinreb’s Major Crimes Unit is handling the prosecution. It is crucial to remember that the details presented in the charging document are allegations, and Polito is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
