Alexander Jay Boyce, 38, has been charged with the felony offense of assaulting a federal officer after an incident near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in South Portland.
According to court documents, on the evening of October 5, 2025, Boyce was part of a group of individuals encroaching on the driveway of the ICE building in South Portland. Law enforcement officers gave multiple warnings to the group to stay off federal property and began to clear the driveway. Rather than comply as directed, Boyce spit on the officer’s helmet. Federal officers immediately arrested Boyce.
The U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, Scott E. Bradford, stated, “Nobody spits on the brave men and women of federal law enforcement and gets away with it. If you spit on a federal law enforcement officer, you will be hit with federal charges.” This incident is part of a larger trend of violence and disruption near the ICE office, with the United States Attorney’s Office charging 31 defendants with federal crimes for offenses committed at the ICE building since June 13, 2025.
Boyce made his first appearance in federal court before a U.S. Magistrate Judge and was released on conditions pending further court proceedings. The charge of felony assault of a federal officer is punishable by up to eight years in federal prison. A criminal complaint is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The incident highlights the ongoing tensions and conflicts near the ICE office in South Portland. The area has seen numerous protests and demonstrations, with some individuals engaging in violent and destructive behavior. Law enforcement officers have been working to maintain order and protect federal property, but the situation remains volatile.
The case against Boyce is a reminder that assaulting a federal officer is a serious crime with severe consequences. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that those who engage in violent behavior are brought to justice. As the investigation into this incident continues, the community can expect to see a strong response from law enforcement and the judicial system.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized the importance of respecting the rule of law and the authority of federal law enforcement officers. The office is working closely with federal agencies and local law enforcement to address the ongoing issues near the ICE office and to ensure that those who engage in criminal behavior are held accountable. The case against Boyce is a significant step in this effort, and the community can expect to see continued action from law enforcement and the judicial system in the coming weeks and months.
