CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA — Stephen Elbert Boykin, a 52-year-old federal prisoner, was sentenced to 51 months in federal prison for mailing threats directed at government officials and family members.
Boykin, a resident of Federal Correctional Institution Gilmer, was serving a 125-month sentence for mailing threatening communications to federal officials at the time of the crime. However, that didn’t stop him from attempting to send more threatening letters while behind bars.
According to court documents, prison staff intercepted several threatening letters Boykin tried to mail. The letters were directed at high-profile targets, including President Barrack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and Vice President Kamala Harris. Other letters threatened an Assistant U.S. Attorney in South Carolina, where Boykin was last prosecuted.
The investigation revealed that Boykin’s actions were a clear breach of his existing sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Prisons investigated the incident.
Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh presided over the case, handing down the sentence of 51 additional months in federal prison. This punishment will now be added to Boykin’s existing 125-month sentence.
Boykin’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and a clear disregard for the safety and well-being of those around him. This sentence serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, not even those behind bars.
The government will continue to take a hard stance against individuals who attempt to intimidate and harass public officials. This sentence sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
