Bradenton Man Gets 10+ Years for Drug Run with Fentanyl, Cocaine

Michael Bernard Code, 36, of Bradenton, is headed to federal prison for 10 years and 5 months after pleading guilty to possessing controlled substances with intent to distribute. U.S. District Judge Charlene E. Honeywell handed down the sentence in Tampa, Florida, sealing the fate of a man caught red-handed during a narcotics sting tied to a broader drug ring.

On June 15, 2017, the Drug Enforcement Administration and Manatee County Sheriff’s Office were conducting surveillance on known drug spots when they spotted a white Buick sedan leaving a suspected narcotics house. The vehicle’s registered owner had a suspended license. When officers initiated a traffic stop, the car didn’t stop immediately—forcing a brief pursuit that ended with the vehicle pulling over and Code bolting from the passenger side, clutching a black object.

Inside the car, driver Tony Marvin Johnson was patted down and found with a pill bottle holding approximately 8.5 grams of a white substance that field-tested positive for cocaine. Officers also pulled $237 from a fanny pack strapped to Johnson’s waist and another $207 from his front pockets—cash consistent with street-level drug trade operations.

Code returned to the vehicle shortly after fleeing and was taken into custody. Witnesses told law enforcement they saw him toss items at two separate locations. A search recovered a black magnetic box containing a digital scale, a baggy of Xanax pills, and multiple bundles of drugs: 13.5 grams of suspected fentanyl, 8.2 grams of fentanyl packaged in 13 smaller baggies, and 5.7 grams of an off-white powder that tested positive for cocaine. Lab analysis later confirmed the suspected fentanyl was actually MDMA.

Code admitted to officers that Johnson had told him to run and ditch the evidence. He also confessed to using narcotics and testing drugs—statements that only deepened his involvement in the trafficking operation. Johnson, who pleaded guilty in the same case, awaits sentencing on April 3, 2018.

The case was investigated by the DEA and Manatee County Sheriff’s Office as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation dubbed “Hot Batch,” aimed at dismantling major drug networks. Assistant U.S. Attorney Shauna S. Hale prosecuted the case, underscoring the federal government’s aggressive push to dismantle supply chains feeding the opioid and stimulant crisis in Florida and beyond.
