Tampa, FL – In a shocking case of government benefits theft, Tekia Middleton, 41, a resident of Bradenton, Florida, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell.
The 18-month prison term is the latest development in a case that began when Middleton’s mother, A.C., received Social Security benefits. After A.C.’s passing on September 7, 2014, Middleton failed to report her death to the Social Security Administration (SSA), causing the SSA to continue paying benefits for A.C. from September 2014 to June 2019.
During this period, Middleton knowingly accessed the funds meant for her mother and used them for her own personal expenses. In total, Middleton stole approximately $51,755 in benefits to which she was not entitled.
As part of her sentence, Middleton was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $51,755. Additionally, the court entered a forfeiture money judgment against her in the same amount, representing the proceeds of the offense.
Middleton pleaded guilty to the charges on May 4, 2021. The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration – Office of the Inspector General and prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Huyler.
According to court documents, Middleton’s actions resulted in the theft of government funds meant for her mother. The SSA continued to pay benefits to Middleton after her mother’s passing, resulting in a significant financial loss to the government.
The sentence handed down by Judge Honeywell serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of stealing government benefits. Middleton’s actions not only resulted in financial loss but also a breach of trust in the social safety net.
As the Grimy Times continues to investigate this case, it is clear that Middleton’s actions were a serious breach of trust and a misuse of government funds. The sentence serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit the system for personal gain.
