NORFOLK, Va. — Brandon Matthew Florin, 34, of Virginia Beach, is going away for a decade behind bars after being sentenced today to 10 years in federal prison for receipt of child pornography. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen, also slaps Florin with a lifetime of supervised release — a permanent mark for a crime that leaves permanent scars on its victims.
Florin pleaded guilty on September 20, 2016, after law enforcement agencies closed in on him through digital trails left on a peer-to-peer network. The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia Beach Police Department first flagged him for distributing illegal material, launching a probe that culminated in a search of his home. What investigators found was a digital archive of horror — more than 5,000 videos containing child pornography and child erotica, stored and accessed on his personal devices.
Forensic analysis of Florin’s computer media revealed the staggering depth of his criminal activity. The trove wasn’t just large in volume — it was vile in content, representing a calculated and ongoing violation of children’s innocence. The evidence left no room for doubt, sealing Florin’s fate long before he entered a guilty plea.
The case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, the Justice Department’s sweeping initiative to combat child sexual exploitation. Led by U.S. Attorneys and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, the program unites federal, state, and local forces to hunt down predators, dismantle networks, and rescue victims. Florin’s conviction is the latest win in a brutal war against hidden online predators.
Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Clark E. Settles, Special Agent in Charge of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington; and Virginia Beach Police Chief James A. Cervera all confirmed the sentencing. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth M. Yusi, who pushed for accountability in a case where the victims can never fully be seen.
For public records, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has posted details at its Eastern District website. Court filings and case documents are accessible via the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia or through PACER under Case No. 2:16-cr-100. This case, labeled 2:16-cr-100, stands as a warning: the dark corners of the internet are no refuge from justice.
