ALEXANDRIA, VA – Logan Roy McCauley, 25, of Hamilton, Virginia, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars today for the sickening production of child pornography. The case, a chilling example of online predation, culminated in a harsh sentence handed down by Senior U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III.
U.S. Attorney G. Zachary Terwilliger minced no words, calling McCauley’s actions “despicable and among the most serious crimes contemplated by the federal criminal code.” He emphasized the “incalculable and unknowable harm” inflicted upon the victim, highlighting the depravity of producing child pornography. Terwilliger thanked the multi-agency task force responsible for bringing McCauley to justice.
Court documents reveal a disturbing pattern of online grooming. In 2016 and 2017, McCauley engaged in sexualized conversations with individuals he believed were minors. The predation escalated in November 2017 when he met a 13-year-old girl online, drove to her residence in West Virginia, and transported her back to his home in Hamilton. Hours later, McCauley sexually abused the minor, recording portions of the assault on his smartphone. He brazenly admitted to creating the video in an online message shortly after.
Law enforcement swiftly responded, arriving at McCauley’s residence the day after the video was created. Both McCauley and the victim were present. McCauley confessed to the recording, which was still on his phone. “This sentence is a result of the hard work of dedicated law enforcement personnel,” stated Matthew J. DeSarno, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office’s Criminal Division. DeSarno also praised the inter-state cooperation that led to the victim’s safe recovery.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the FBI Washington Field Office’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force. The task force includes agents and detectives from numerous agencies across multiple jurisdictions, including Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, and Loudoun counties. The case originated from a missing person report filed in West Virginia, prompting a joint investigation between local authorities and the FBI’s Pittsburgh Field Office.
This prosecution falls under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexander P. Berrang, Jay V. Prabhu, and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Gwendelynn E. Bills successfully prosecuted the case. The Department of Justice and its partners remain committed to identifying, rescuing, and prosecuting those who prey on children.
