John Leslie Hess, 64, of Parkersburg, West Virginia, was sentenced today to two years in federal prison for possession of over 600 images of child pornography, a grim reminder of the hidden predators operating in plain sight. U.S. Attorney Carol Casto announced the conviction, underscoring the federal crackdown on child sexual exploitation in the Southern District of West Virginia.
Hess previously pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, admitting that on March 2, 2015, he knowingly possessed visual depictions of prepubescent minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. The evidence seized from his Parkersburg residence included multiple personal computers and media devices loaded with illicit material, revealing a digital trail of exploitation and depravity.
Investigators determined Hess used a peer-to-peer file sharing network to download, receive, and distribute child pornography—amplifying the reach and damage of his criminal behavior. The discovery of hundreds of illegal images highlights the role of digital platforms in enabling the proliferation of child sexual abuse material.
The investigation was a coordinated effort between the FBI, the West Virginia State Police, the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the Parkersburg Police Department. Their joint operation dismantled a hidden network of exploitation, bringing Hess to justice after years of illicit activity.
U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr. handed down the sentence, which includes 10 years of federal supervised release following prison time. The first year of that release will be spent in home confinement. Hess will also be required to register as a sex offender for life, a permanent mark of his crimes.
Assistant United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston prosecuted the case as part of an ongoing initiative by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to combat child sexual exploitation. The Southern District of West Virginia continues to prioritize these investigations, sending a clear message: those who exploit children will face relentless pursuit and severe punishment.
