Brandon Paul Schatz, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Alaska 2023

A Wasilla man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for violating his felony probation by possessing a firearm. Brandon Paul Schatz, 41, of Wasilla, Alaska, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason in federal court in Anchorage.

According to court documents, Schatz brought a loaded Glock Model 42 semi-automatic pistol to his work at a gravel pit in Wasilla on May 23, 2016. At the time, Schatz was on felony probation with the State of Alaska for a conviction of Assault in the Third Degree.

Before imposing a sentence, Judge Gleason commented that due to his history, Mr. Schatz cannot be in possession of any firearms, and that her sentence focused on protection of the public given Mr. Schatz’s prior convictions for assault, weapons offenses, and driving under the influence.

Acting U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Alaska State Troopers for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of this case.

Schatz was sentenced to 21 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence was handed down in federal court in Anchorage.

The case is a reminder that violating probation can have serious consequences. In this case, Schatz’s possession of a firearm while on probation led to a lengthy prison sentence.
