MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A local man has been convicted of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a federal crime with severe consequences. Brandon Scott Castle, 24, of Falling Waters, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of illegally possessing a firearm in May 2016.

Castle, who had previously been convicted of second-degree assault in Washington County, Maryland, admitted to having a 12-gauge, double-barrel shotgun in his possession in Berkeley County. This conviction highlights the dangers of repeat offenders possessing firearms.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul T. Camilletti, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office providing key evidence and assistance. U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the case.

Castle faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence will depend on the seriousness of the offense and Castle’s prior criminal history. This conviction serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that felons do not possess firearms.

The investigation and subsequent conviction demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to keeping communities safe from violent crime. The guilty plea underscores the need for stricter gun laws and more effective enforcement of existing laws to prevent felons from accessing firearms.

In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen emphasized the gravity of the offense and the importance of holding repeat offenders accountable. This case highlights the need for continued support for law enforcement agencies working to combat violent crime and protect public safety.
