Brendan Sheils, a 32-year-old man from Burlington, Massachusetts, was sentenced to a hefty prison term for his role in a disturbing case of ammunition possession.
According to court documents, Sheils was found guilty of illegally possessing 30 pieces of ammunition, which led to a 46-month prison sentence and three years of supervised release. The conviction comes after Sheils pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of ammunition in December 2018.
On February 22, 2018, police received information that Sheils was in possession of an Uzi bump stock weapon and had plans to attack the Burlington Police Department. The following day, police executed a search warrant at Sheils’ residence, where they recovered 30 pieces of ammunition, as well as an AR-15 type rifle, which was found to be a ‘ghost gun’.
A ‘ghost gun’ is a firearm that is made by purchasing component parts and then assembling the pieces together. In this case, the rifle was loaded with 28 of the seized ammunition.
The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving the United States Attorney’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Woburn Police Department, and the Burlington Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of the U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case.
The announcement was made by United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling, Kelly Brady, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boston Field Division, Woburn Police Chief Robert J. Ferullo Jr., and Burlington Police Chief Michael Kent.
Sheils’ sentence serves as a reminder of the severe consequences that individuals face when they engage in illicit activities involving firearms and ammunition.
