A Helena man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking crime, authorities announced today.
A U.S. Attorney’s office press release stated that Bret Russell Hamlin, 54, was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison, to be followed by five years of supervised release, for his crime.
The defendant pleaded guilty in January to attempted possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The crime occurred in 2021, according to court documents.
Law enforcement officials intercepted a package containing approximately three pounds of methamphetamine in August 2021. The package was addressed to Hamlin and was mailed from Fresno, California.
After obtaining a warrant to search the package, investigators located the methamphetamine. They later served a search warrant on Hamlin’s residence and found additional quantities of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, digital scales, plastic baggies, over $2,000 in cash, and a pistol.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey K. Starnes prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Missouri River Drug Task Force, U.S. Postal Service, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities. The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
