Brian David Casey, a 35-year-old man from Clermont, Florida, was arrested on a one-count indictment charging him with possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. According to the indictment, Casey fired a shotgun during an argument with his neighbor on March 20, 2023, and was subsequently found to be in possession of a loaded revolver when federal agents arrested him.
As a convicted felon, Casey is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law. He had previously been convicted of three felonies, including burglary in 2008 and two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer in 2011. If convicted, Casey faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The program brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Casey’s arrest was the result of an investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a federal criminal offense. Every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
The case highlights the importance of the PSN program, which has been instrumental in reducing violent crime in communities across the country. By fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, we can make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Casey is currently facing charges for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. His case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws and the importance of community-based initiatives in reducing crime.
