Brian David White, Social Security Fraud, Kansas 2023

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A former Topeka man has been caught in a scheme to defraud the Social Security Administration of nearly $90,000 in disability benefits.

Brian David White, 43, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of Social Security fraud, admitting that he returned to work and failed to report it to the SSA. As a result, the agency paid him over $88,800 in disability benefits he was no longer entitled to receive.

According to court documents, White was approved for disability benefits in 2002 due to an inflammatory arthritis condition that made him unable to work. However, he went on to attend Washburn University in Topeka and earn a degree in radiologic technology. After earning his degree, he worked as a technician at Holton Community Hospital in Holton, Kan., and later began working full-time for the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

White admitted that he intentionally failed to report his work activity to the SSA, allowing him to continue receiving disability payments he was no longer entitled to. Sentencing is set for April 6, after which he faces a maximum penalty of 5 years in federal prison, a fine up to $250,000, and restitution.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom commended the office of Inspector General for the Social Security Administration and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Trey Alford for their work on the case.

The case serves as a reminder that the SSA is committed to rooting out fraud and ensuring that benefits are only paid to those who are truly in need. The agency will continue to work tirelessly to identify and prosecute individuals who attempt to defraud the system.

White’s case is a prime example of the consequences of committing Social Security fraud. The SSA will not tolerate such behavior and will aggressively pursue those who attempt to take advantage of the system.
