THEFT ROCKS OKLAHOMA COMMUNITY
A Durant man has been sentenced to house confinement for his role in a high-profile theft case in Indian Country.
Brian Douglas McGaha, age 42, was sentenced to 6 months’ house confinement, 2 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $500.00 in restitution for Theft In Indian Country, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1151, 1152 and 661.
The charges arose from an investigation by the Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse Police and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
On June 28, 2018, McGaha, a non-Indian, took and carried away, with intent to steal, a voucher in the amount of $500.00, which was the personal property of another person who was an Indian.
The Honorable Kimberly E. West, Magistrate Judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, in Muskogee, presided over the hearing. Assistant United States Attorney Sarah McAmis represented the United States.
McGaha’s sentence is a stark reminder that theft in Indian Country will not be tolerated. The community is safer now that justice has been served.
The case is a testament to the important work being done by law enforcement agencies in Indian Country to protect the rights of Native Americans and bring perpetrators to justice.
