Brian Scheckla, Unlawful Dealing in Firearms, California 2024

Burney man Brian Scheckla, 61, has been charged with unlawful dealing in firearms, a federal offense that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to court documents, Scheckla traveled to gun shows in California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, and Idaho without a license to sell firearms. Despite receiving a cease and desist letter from the ATF in 2018, Scheckla continued to sell guns at 20 shows per year.

A review of firearm purchase records revealed that Scheckla was the initial purchaser of at least 10 firearms that have been recovered by law enforcement as part of criminal investigations in Manteca, Sacramento, Modesto, Vallejo, Elk Grove, Anderson, Ontario, and Rancho Cordova.

On February 12, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Scheckla’s residence in Burney and seized over 200 firearms. Last October, Scheckla’s associate, Gary Osterhout, was charged with unlawful dealing in firearms.

The charges are only allegations, and Scheckla is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case is the product of an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Lee is prosecuting the case.

Brian Scheckla’s actions put the public at risk, and his indictment sends a clear message that those who disregard the law will be held accountable.
