BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS – In a shocking case of betrayal of public trust, Brian Thibodeau, a 49-year-old former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier from Danvers, was sentenced to one year of probation for stealing mail containing gift cards and cash from his postal customers.
Thibodeau, who worked as a letter carrier in the Saugus Post Office since 2001, pleaded guilty on August 5, 2021, to one count of theft of mail by an employee of the U.S. Postal Service.
According to court documents, Thibodeau stole cash and gift cards sent in the mail he was responsible for delivering to postal customers and spent the funds for his personal use. The investigation revealed that Thibodeau stole approximately $2,000 worth of gift cards from his customers on his route.
The court ordered Thibodeau to pay a fine of $7,500 and restitution in the amount of $175.
Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell and Matthew Modafferi, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General, Northeast Area Office, announced the sentencing.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia M. Carris, Deputy Chief of Mendell’s Public Corruption & Special Prosecutions Unit, prosecuted the case.
Thibodeau’s actions not only betrayed the trust of his customers but also undermined the integrity of the U.S. Postal Service. His sentencing serves as a reminder that those who abuse their positions of trust will be held accountable.
