Charles Doughty Sewell, Tax Perjury, Virginia 2024

Bristol Man Accused of Tax Perjury

A federal grand jury has charged Charles Doughty Sewell, 65, of Bristol, Va., with a variety of federal tax charges, including tax perjury.

According to the indictment, Sewell resided in Bristol, Virginia, earned income and was provided W-2 forms by his employer. However, despite being under a permanent injunction, Sewell allegedly filed false tax returns between July 2010 and February 2015.

The indictment alleges that Sewell’s actions impeded the due administration of the Internal Revenue Code and interfered with the administration and enforcement of the internal revenue law.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service.

Assistant United States Attorney C. Patrick Hogeboom III will prosecute the case for the United States.

The indictment comes after a stipulation between Sewell and the United States, entered in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon in 2010, which permanently enjoined Sewell from engaging in any activity subject to penalty under the Internal Revenue Code.

A court appearance has been made by the defendant in District Court, and the case will proceed accordingly.
