Adam Raymond Mason, First-Degree Murder, Oklahoma 2020

BRISTOW, OKLAHOMA – Adam Raymond Mason, 29, of Bristow, Oklahoma, is facing federal charges for the alleged murder of his five-year-old daughter, a crime U.S. Attorney Trent Shores called “heartbreaking.” Mason was charged today by criminal complaint with first degree murder in Indian Country, following the discovery of the child’s burned body.

According to court documents, the alleged murder took place on or about August 25th and 26th, 2020. The victim’s mother reportedly last spoke with her daughter on the evening of August 25th and grew concerned when Mason allegedly refused to allow her to speak with the child the following day. Creek County deputies responded to a welfare check at 38187 West 311th St. South and discovered the charred remains of a child. Mason was apprehended approximately one mile west of the residence in Bristow.

The details emerging from the investigation are chilling. A joint interview with a Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse investigator and an FBI agent revealed a disturbing alleged motive. Mason reportedly told investigators he believed his daughter was controlled by witchcraft. The affidavit states Mason confessed to punching the victim, drowning her, and then transporting her body to a creek bed where he set it ablaze. Both Mason and his daughter are enrolled members of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.

“The United States filed charges today alleging that a father punched, drowned, burned, and murdered his five-year-old daughter in Indian Country,” Shores stated. “This is heartbreaking. The alleged victim was set to start kindergarten next week.” Shores emphasized that the criminal complaint is merely an accusation and that Mason is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The investigation is a collaborative effort between the FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Muscogee (Creek) Nation Lighthorse Tribal Police, and the Creek County Sheriff’s Office. Shores announced the United States Attorney’s Office will present the case to a federal Grand Jury to determine if probable cause exists for an indictment. If an indictment is returned, Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Roberts and Shores will prosecute the case “to the fullest extent of the law.” Victim specialists will also work with the surviving family to provide necessary resources.

Mason is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and is scheduled to make his initial appearance in U.S. District Court at 2 pm today. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it develops, bringing you the unvarnished truth from the Oklahoma federal court system.
