British Man Who Tried to Grab Cop’s Gun at Trump Rally Sentenced

Michael Steven Sandford, a 20-year-old British national, was sentenced to 12 months and one day in federal prison for attempting to rip a loaded Glock 9 millimeter handgun from a Las Vegas police officer’s holster during a Donald Trump rally in June 2016. The brazen act, carried out at the Mystere Theatre inside the Treasure Island Casino, triggered a full-scale security lockdown and forced law enforcement to scramble mid-speech.

Sandford, unlawfully present in the U.S. after overstaying his tourist visa past its Aug. 30, 2015 expiration, had taken shooting lessons at a Las Vegas gun range the day before the incident. On June 18, 2016, he entered the rally—clearly marked as a restricted zone under U.S. Secret Service protection—and approached a uniformed Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer. Pretending to ask for Donald Trump’s autograph, Sandford lunged with both hands and attempted to yank the officer’s sidearm from its holster.

Chaos erupted in seconds. Security personnel, Secret Service agents, and local cops swarmed the scene as Sandford was tackled, cuffed, and dragged out of the theater. The disruption halted Trump’s speech and triggered emergency protocols designed for active threats. No shots were fired, but the potential for mass violence was immediate and undeniable.

Sandford pleaded guilty on Sept. 13, 2016, to two federal charges: illegal alien in possession of a firearm and impeding and disrupting the orderly conduct of government business and official functions. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge James C. Mahan, who underscored the gravity of targeting law enforcement at a high-security political event.

“The event’s security is a priority for the safety of the speaker, all attendees and law enforcement,” said U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden for the District of Nevada. “We will continue working together with all our federal, state and local law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of all Nevada citizens and visitors.”

The case was investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared L. Grimmer. Sandford’s actions, though not linked to a broader terror plot, exposed vulnerabilities in campaign event security and sent shockwaves through federal protection agencies tasked with shielding political figures.
