Brockton Driver Dragged Officer, Crashed at 100 MPH

BOSTON – A Brockton man is facing serious federal charges after a brazen assault on a law enforcement officer and a subsequent high-speed chase that put countless lives at risk. Tykeam Jackson, 25, allegedly dragged a deputized federal officer with his vehicle before crashing head-on into a guardrail on Route 24, reaching speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour.

The incident unfolded on July 27, 2020, when the officer initiated a traffic stop on Route 28 in Avon for speeding. Instead of complying, Jackson allegedly floored the accelerator, dragging the officer for several feet before throwing them to the ground. He then fled, blowing through traffic signals and recklessly entering oncoming lanes. The chase culminated in a violent crash on Route 24, where Jackson’s vehicle slammed into a guardrail after attempting to cross all three travel lanes.

Undeterred, Jackson allegedly abandoned the wrecked vehicle and ran across the busy highway, narrowly avoiding being struck by multiple cars. A Massachusetts State Trooper eventually apprehended him while he was obstructing traffic on a nearby roadway. The recklessness of Jackson’s actions could have easily resulted in multiple fatalities.

Court documents reveal Jackson is currently on probation stemming from a prior armed robbery conviction in Suffolk Superior Court. This history of criminal behavior further underscores the gravity of the current charges. He was arrested on Friday, August 28, 2020, and charged by criminal complaint with one count of assaulting, resisting or impeding a federal officer. Following an initial appearance, Jackson was detained pending a detention hearing scheduled for September 4, 2020.

If convicted, Jackson faces a hefty sentence of up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Glenn A. MacKinlay and Sarah B. Hoefle of the Organized Crime and Gang Unit.

United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling, along with Kelly Brady, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s New England Field Division, and Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey announced the charges. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. It’s important to remember that the details presented in the complaint are allegations, and Jackson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
